Tanya Hawley and Naadirah
Naadirah’s legacy
"When I look back it never ceases to amaze me, what a
far-reaching effect Naadirah had on my life and the lives
of so many other people. More and more amazing stories
are emerging of how Naadirah's story inspired the love
and passion to own an Arabian and become a breeder
of Arabians. This book has had a profound and immeasurable
impact on the breed in Australia"
says Tanya.
Tanya Hawley
is still breeding a small number of
superb Arabians every year, all descending from Naadirah.
It is hard to ignore the undercurrent of excitement Tanya exudes
when she speaks about the horses at the stud and the current
breeding activity.
Her love, passion and dedication to her horses and the Arabian breed
is unequalled. She is a hands on breeder attending all foalings,
imprinting the foals, educating them and is responsible for the daily care
of all the horses, with part time help.
More to Come
A sequel to
NAADIRAH The Arabian Dream
is under way as well as
merchandising The Arabian Dream branded products.
Naadirah The Arabian Dream
A lifetime of horses and art...
Growing up on an isolated sheep and wheat farm in the central west
of NSW, Australia, surrounded by creativity, art and music, provided
many challenges which helped to shape the character of Tanya Hawley..
Tanya Joy Styles was born in Condobolin to a very talented mother,
Muriel, who excelled at everything creative - art, music, craft, as well as
sports and riding etc -and a gentle father, Gibson. They were both horse
lovers and competent riders and were delighted when their baby daughter
showed the same love for horses and animals.
They encouraged the interest with the purchase of a black pony,
Billy, who had taught many children to ride and knew all about
sidling up to fences etc, to make it easy for a small child to scramble
on to his back.
Following Billy was a bay 12 hand pony, Sonny, bought at a
clearing sale at Tanya's request and brought home in the back
of the utility. Sonny was a trusted companion for many years
and divided his time between farm work and gymkhanas and shows.
The nearest town was 23 miles, and with no horse transport
as we know it today, Tanya and her Dad rode and led the horses
to town the day before the annual agricultural show, the whole family
competed on the same horses in various events, then they were ridden
home the following day.
When Tanya discovered Arabians with the pretty dished head,
large dark eyes, arched neck and pluming tail, the seed
of the Arabian Dream had been planted.
Purebreds were scarce
and after a long search a part bred grey mare was found
at Toongabbie near Sydney- Tanya fell in love with the
description by her owner, which included the words
"large, soft brown eyes"
Sharona by Zadaran travelled by train from Sydney to
Condobolin and was ridden home by Gibson. She became
Tanya's constant companion until boarding school
interfered with this idyllic existence which had centered around
horses. If Tanya wasn't riding she was drawing and
painting horses and landscapes.
Tanya's early education was at Condobolin Public School,
high school at SCEGGS, Moss Vale (chosen because it was in
the country and horse riding lessons were part of the curriculum).
Later she studied a Business course at the famous Miss Hales
Business College in Sydney which stood her in good stead
for her future.
Horses had to become a holiday pastime when Tanya moved
to Sydney to work as a commercial artist
in the studio of Jon Hawley.
Before she married her boss, she worked as the
contact girl and studio manager for his busy
art studio - her job was to go to the advertising
agencies to be briefed on each job, brief the
appropriate artist, then deliver the finished job.
Mixing with all the art directors, copy writers,
photographers and account managers of Sydney's
largest Advertising Agencies was heady stuff for
a shy young country girl but just what she
needed to give her the confidence she lacked.
After some years Jon discovered Tanya's artistic
talent which she hadn't mentioned, and
began giving her some of the illustration work
which came to the studio.
Fashion drawing followed and her crowning
achievement was doing the fashion drawings
for the Wool Board.
She learned design in the studio and later became
a successful logo and corporate designer in her own right.
Since the early 1980's Tanya has worked for an Animal
Health Company handling all their packaging design
and printed matter which has continued to this day.
Another of her clients was a horse feed company.
When Tanya and Jon went to live and work in London
for a year, the interest in Arabians surfaced again,
with weekends spent visiting Arabian studs.
They were led to Naadirah
and the story is told in the book
NAADIRAH The Arabian Dream.
After Jon and Tanya's marriage break up in 1983,
Tanya went through her "dark years"-soul searching
and learning to cope alone. It was a daunting time with
many trials and some accomplishments to be proud of.
Life continued, work continued, the stud continued,
until she met her next partner, Jon Hall.
He was also involved in the advertising industry as a
marketing consultant and writer, and a successful small
advertising agency evolved utilizing their combined
compatible talents.
In 1995 Jon and Tanya decided to pursue horse breeding
more vigorously and wanted to move to the country.
For reasons beyond their control, the beautiful little house
and barn at Dural remained on the market for 7 years
before being sold.
They finally moved to the present 100 acre property at Nilma
in Victoria in 2003.
Shortly afterwards, Jon was diagnosed with lung cancer
and the horses and breeding were put on hold
for several years.
Tanya's life revolved around Jon's well being,
until he died in 2006.
Tanya is now re-emerging, the house has been renovated,
a studio built, the property is being developed and beautified,
mares are being bred and horses ridden.
She is a survivor.
She is intensely proud of the fact that her artistic ability
has financed the Arabian Stud and she has achieved it on her own .
The Hawley Arabian Stud is now proceeding into the 21st Century
with a vigour that the Arabian Spirit is known for, inspired
by Tanya's creative depth, dedication to perfection and
evolving vision.
The Stud has drawn enthusiastic support from
dedicated Arabian breeders and admirers of the
Naadirah Family from around the world.
Naadirah The Arabian Dream
The Hawley Arabian Stud
is a rare experience in our life time. The
unsurpassed spirit and beauty of the horses,
the legends hidden in their bloodlines, with ancestors which became
ambassadors throughout the world
The stud was founded in 1969 when the foundation mare, Naadirah
(Aswan - Napraslina), was purchased in
England. Shortly after Naadirah arrived in Australia she foaled a grey
filly, Nara (by Hadban Enzahi) and the stud
has continued breeding the descendants of these two mares, with the
later addition of Flabys Sar Monisa
(Sar Ibn Moniet - Hi Fashion Timba) imported from USA in 1977.
The stud now consists of 4 stallions, and 14 females - some owned in
partnerships - and is located in Victoria's
scenic Gippsland, just east of Melbourne.
The Mares...
The female lines within the Naadirah Family all have different qualities
and have all made valuable contributions to the Arabian breed within
Australia. Their offspring represent their celebrated past as well as the
dreams of future generations.
Naadirah's bay daughter, Naazirah by Mustafa (imp)
(Hadban Enzahi - Masarrah) is the dam of the 1996
unanimous Australian Champion Stallion Naavah
(by Vision), Supreme Champion Stallion Naazan
and the Australian Champion Top Ten mare, Naazarah.

Nara's daughter Nazli produced a family whose
distinguishing features include pretty, dishy heads,
tippy ears, balanced body structure and classical
Arabian movement. Among them are the 1989
Australian National Reserve Champion Mare Nazelle
famous for her huge eyes and exquisite head. Nazli's
grey daughter Clifton Park Neeka and her bay son
Nazzai have both won Australian Champion Top Ten
honours twice, among other Supreme Champion wins.
Nazzai's chestnut full sister Nakourah, is still waiting
in the wings.
Naadirah's last foal, Naadella by Nile,
has just recently passed away at 26
years of age. She is represented at
the stud by her daughter Nyraanah
by Alii (imp USA) who is the mother
of the classically beautiful Supreme
Champion Mare, Niva by Nazzai.
The statuesque Nahla's Mahabbah and
her Naavah daughter Nahlanah by Naavah
(co-owned with Mark Lilley) and Nahlanah's
filly Nahlia by Nazzai, are from a different
branch of the family through Nara's daughter
Nahla by Linden
Ghalab (imp SA). Extra height, longer necks,
huge expressive eyes and a loving nature
combined with a snorty presence set this family
apart.
The other imported mare, Flabys Sar Monisa
has founded a very important part of the
Hawley Stud through her daughter Maaza
by Naazim (Mustafa - Naadirah). She is
known for her superlative movement which
she passes on to her offspring, and is
represented at the stud by her grey son
Maali Ibn Maaza and bay daughter Mimrah,
both sired by Nazzai.
Her chestnut daughter Muta'Kalima by Naavah
and a grey filly Maa'Mouna by Alii, and Muti's
chestnut daughter Mukmal (by Naa'Zahar,
Naavah's full brother) are other valued
members of the family. Muti's grey colt sired
by Rokewood Riyadh is co-owned with The
Palms Arabian Stud in Queensland and is
developing into an extremely beautiful young
stallion with his own distinctive personality.
The Stallions...
Three noble stallions share the promise of passing
on Naadirah's distinguished heritage to future
generations, and have the qualities which create the
unique personalities we prize in our horses.
Nazzai
a bay, is the embodiment of the
Classic Arabian stallion with perfect
balance and harmonious structure.
He is a totally trustworthy horse in
temperament which is a combination
of the fire of his sire Naavah and the
loving, trusting and sensible disposition
of his dam, Nazli.
He is an inspiration when he free plays,
and like his sire, can show awesome
masculinity. His movement is balanced,
cadenced and elevated and to watch him
move thrills the senses.

Naa'Zahar
the full brother of Naavah by Vision,
inherits the iridescent bay colour of his dam
Naazirah as well as her gentle sensitivity, large
kind eyes and well mannered behaviour. He is
a 'horseman's horse' with imposing size,
masculinity and presence. The tremendous
power in impulsion and extension providing
the massive ground covering stride results
from his excellent conformation, strength
and balance.
Maali
a grey son of Nazzai and Maaza,
is a smaller horse with a handsome
dished head, together with balanced
and correct conformation and faultless
legs and hooves. He is a powerful young
stallion in his own right with the shoulder
and hindquarter necessary to achieve
the same strength of movement which
is a distinguishing quality of this family.

Naadirah
was the essence of the ancient desert Arabian Horse.
Her regal spirit reflected this noble heritage. And her kind and
gentle nature endeared her to all. Naadirah will never be replaced,
but her divine qualities live on in her descendants.
We are grateful for the privilege of sharing her life.
