Rehoming
Meet Mac
who needs a loving home,
one of 15 horses available for rehoming right now.
"A real little character quite cheeky sometimes
especially if doesn't want to come in,
but can hear polos from across the field and this always works.
Leading well now, good with farrier, vet etc.
Needs a home with lots of attention, quiet environment..."
Seem good with all other horses and ponies so far
but is apt to be bullied. Companion only"

approximately 10 years old.

Her status is Available Now.

Good to catch, farrier, load, etc. can be in your face and does
panic if other horses are being bolshy. Quite insecure.
Loves people, very sweet natured
Will need an experienced, sympathetic home to continue
schooling, will also need to be near here so can get to know
her here before she moves.
May 2006 - now hacking out alone and in company, walk,
trot and canter. Is doing very well. Seems better if hacked
regularly, 4 to 5 times a week, is coping well with faster
work too. (see history for recent work)
Please note because of her stifle problem the maximum
weight she will carry on a regular basis is 10.5 stone -
ALSO NOT A NOVICE RIDE (as above) Has been known
to rear and buck and can nap if not confident in rider.
Dec 2007 - been off work for while due to quarantine,
lack of time. stifle has stiffened up a bit so will need to
build muscles again. Should be ready to rehome shortly
Feb 2008 - hacking out well, can be slightly stiff in
canter but otherwise doing very well

Description:
Rug size = 6'
Year of Birth: 1998
Distinguishing marks: None.
Freezemark/Chip: 6R4
Date arrived at Sanctuary: 20.08.03
Born in the sanctuary? No

History:
About to be shod due to problems in hips/stifle - probably born
with a slight deformity agreed to bring into sanctuary to see if
can help her at all or if not try to home her as a companion
Very sweet natured
Can be bossy in herd situation, seems better with ponies than
larger horses
March 2005 - Persisting with walking and excercises - no
real improvement - will rehome as companion only, Good
to catch, farrier, Groom etc. Would probably stay in stable
with hay on own whilst other horse being ridden. Very
affectionate towards people, quite in your face.
June 2006 - turned out with larger horses and definitely
bottom of herd, no signs of bossiness for some time
Jan 2004 - bringing lightly back into work as unable to
diagnose problem at present as showing sound, this is
being done under vets instruction.
26.06.06 - see above
23.10.06 - returning to sanctuary later this week - as
confidence grown in new home has gradually started
to take the mickey out of caretaker to the point of
rearing and taking hold - will reassess when in.
08.11.06 - first hack out since back did try it on a bit,
did not get away with anything and second hack no problems.
02.07 - Going very well at moment, was a bit naughty on
fast hack a couple of weeks ago but just overexcited and had
a few small bucks etc in canter.
Medical or behavioral history:
Hip Problems - lameness if ridden
14.09.04 - first visit with physio, pelvis very rotated, extensive
treatment given with ongoing treatments - will see how this
goes before going further.
Oct 2004 - coming on well, started bucking in field so
obviously feeling well.
Physio seen again and very pleased has not reverted so
fingers crossed.
Has now started light ground work, physio wants to see
again before weight on her back again
30.11.04 - Physio - Hips gone out again, put back again
and start leading out on roads to build muscles - no
weight on back yet.
15.09.05 - dentist - needed mild sedation
12.01.05 - physio - pleased with progress, slight tightness in
lumbar but hips not too bad, can up work slightly and possible
start light walk work in school and see how goes
23.02.05 - Bone Scan revealed Bone Pathology associated with
cruciate ligament in off hind (stifle) probably caused by injury
before the age of two years. Also some arthritic activity in
nearside due to compensating and some arthritis in coffin joint
of near fore. No specific treatment, some anti-inflammatory
drugs for now and work in hand to try and build up wasted
muscles to help support the joint. Possibly come right enough
to light hack, this would help keep her sound if we can get there.
12.10.05 - came in from field am with large open wound to
nearside shoulder, vet attended, stitches, painkillers & antibiotics -
on checking field discovered she had run into gate catch overnight
26.06.06 - since hacking regularly has stayed sound, spent months
building up muscles with ground work and this has paid off.
Have not attempted to shoe on hinds, previous attempts resulted
in lameness and as seems quite comfortable as she is there does
not seem any need for shoeing them. Is shod on fronts with no problems
21.05.07 - staff reports slight lameness when ridden in trot, farrier
checked and pulse in both fronts, removed shoes and treated as
laminitis, will get vet to check asap
25.05.07 - Confirmed Laminitis, never had it before, recent changes
of weather caused major grass flush so expect this as cause - vet check
and will book for xrays shortly
31.05.07 - xrays confirmed tiny bit of separation but alignment ok and no
drop or rotation. cut danilon completely and start going out at night as
stressing being in all the time, ground soft at mo
06.07 - went lame again so back on bx rest -
13.06.307 vert check soundish, start putting out 1/2 hour a day then
increase by 1/2 a day once settled
04.07.07 - now out all day, vet check - still very fat (but without
excercise cannot really reduce this is already on diet) continue on
same routine for another couple of weeks if all ok can start back into work
19.02.08 - slight cough last day or so, on meds tfn
27.02.08- vet check - lungs all good, off all meds
and see how goes

Handreared but a real sweetie, not in your face at all.
Good to catch, handle, lead etc. Fairly quiet and shy
and does tend to get bullied so needs a gentle companion.
Very nicely put together and moves well, will make lovely
riding pony in a couple of years. Has led out on roads
and been introduced to traffic etc in company.
Description:
Orphan Foal, handreared but not bolshy
measured 11.07.07 = 7.3hh
measured 11.04.08 = 10hh
Year of Birth: 2007
Distinguishing marks: None.
Date arrived at Sanctuary: 27.06.07

Medical or behavioral history:
Damage to nearside eye on arrival - treating
with drops, may still lose it
Severe weatherbeat and mud fever on arrival -
short course antibiotics and topical treatment
04.07.07 - vet check, doing well so far, continue
with eye drops and check again in week or so
05.07.07 - lots of gunk from eye, looks like abscess
burst? - vet didn't think so just dust.
11.07.07 - slightly chesty, further antibiotic course.
otherwise doing well, putting on weight, scabs lifting etc
25.07.07 - seems to be doing very well, growing and filling
out, plenty of energy. recent vet advice stopped eye drops
and remaining clear, will get eye surgeon to see him when
down to see if needs operation
07.08.07 - vet check - has spoke to eye specialist and apparently
operation carries a lot of risk that might make the eye worse,
and seeing as it has healed so well it is better not to operate.
We have to continue with the atropine (eye drops) once a week
this will help gradually dilate the iris as much as possible.
17.09.07 - vet check - doing very well, chest clear, eye good,
very pleased with him. will try to run on through winter as
colt and geld next spring
07.11.07 - vet check as kept close to infected foals - all clear

pouch swabs today
30.01.08 - Quattro – still harsh in lungs and starting to
shift a lot of congestion, coughing. Needs to move around
as much as possible – keep on venti & secreata tfn
06.02.08 - vet check - really good, off all meds
19.02.08 - got a bit congested & slight cough once
off meds, so back on for a little while then will reduce
more gradually - further swab taken
31.03.08 - swab results = streptococcus Zooepidemicus

Good to catch, handle, lead etc. Quite an individual, not overly
affectionate with people can take or leave them, this would
undoubtably improve in a quieter enviroment with just one person
handling him. Quite a laid back foal and very independant.
Seems to get on with anyone (horse/ponywise) will make good
companion and potential child's pony in a few years

Good to catch, shoe, traffic, load etc. Mainly lead rein pony,
excellent as long as someone beside him (does lead very well off
another pony as well). Now schooling well, hacks out well in
company, has not been out on own.
Has got Cushings disease so will require medication daily,
also must be kept on tight restriction, is also slightly arthritic
and will stiffen up if in overnight, however loosens very quickly
once out, and is perfectly capable of light work, in fact this seems
to help. A real sweetheart loves people and seems to get on with
anything in field. Loves people and attention, ideal child's
lead rein and very first pony.
Feb 2008 - in at night last month or so but has caused slight
locking stifles, so back out at night and just comes in three times
a week during day, flat paddock and seems absolutely fine.
Therefore would suit yard where can live out with good shelter,
flatish paddock.
History:
Originally born on Dartmoor and brought from Tavistock
Market at about six months. We head collar broke him and for
about two years he was homed as a companion near Barnstaple,
he was retuned at the age of three and then rehomed nearby.
Backed and brought on in this loan home, excellent lead rein
pony - even hunted on lead rein.
Once outgrown passed onto neighbour where spent next
4 1/2 years as lead rein and companion. started to get
Laminitis and when started getting it for no apparent reason
tested for Cushings which came back positive.
09.10.07 - off colour, blood test showed slight infection
Description:
Rug = 4'3"
Year of Birth: 1993
Distinguishing marks: stockings/socks - all four legs
mane & tail white as is rest of body in winter -
summer coat - more dappled
darker round muzzle
Freezemark/Chip: S29
Date arrived at Sanctuary: 05.11.93
Born in the sanctuary? No
Medical or behavioral history:
Laminitis November 2001
prone to overweight
slight unsoundness every so often,
query poss cushings. Caretaker aware & will
keep us posted
January 2005 - diagnosed with full Cushings Disease -
caretaker cannot cope with this so brought back to
Sanctuary to commence medication.
10.03.05 - Physio - slightly tight accross lumbar,
probably due to Laminitis
May 2005 - xrays front feet, no rotation evident
07.06.05 - still not sound - checked by physio and no
real problems, also shod on fronts maybe this will help
16.06.05 - Being rehomed with Busby, new caretaker
prepared to continue investigation into lameness and
continue treatment for Cushings. Only just up the road
so nice and close
13.06.07 - vet check - all ok continue as are
20.07.07 - xrays taken - very little rotation which
is surprising as walks like he has rotated, but did
confirm two small areas of arthritis, in the fetlock
and coffin joint. Vet advising bring very slowly into
work and see how goes.
20.08.07 - vet check as been back in work a week
or so - all looking good, continue as are
08.10.07 - very off colour, high temp -
on anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, blood taken,
nothing conclusive, liver enzymes high & red/white cells low.
11.10.07 - more blood taken, brighter in self and temp
dropped - await results
12.10.07 - liver enzyme increased again, other results the
same - retest early next week - if deteriorates over weekends
- vet asap
15.10.07 - vet chk, bloods taken again, liver enzymes still
going up, will scan liver asap, in meantime reduce feed
as much as poss to lower impact on liver
19.10.07 - ultra sound, liver small but not too bad -
biopsy taken
26.10.07 - biopsy results = cholangiohepatitis - bacterial
infection via bile duct - antibiotics for three weeks -
if does not respond may require steroids
11.01.08 - responded better than could hope, back in
work now and full of it.
16.01.08 - vet check as been very stiff through legs -
suspect just arthritis a little inflammed - low dose
painkillers for few days and see how goes
30.01.08 - still really rubbish after being stables,
further investigation showed nearside stifle locking,
put back out at night which should help, and see how goes
19.02.08 - doing very well now out most of time -
will resume work shortly
05.03.08 - back in light work and doing very well
27.03.08 - dentist, all good

Tends to keep to herself, arthritis though back so on
low dose painkillers for life and cannot be ridden. Is
comfortable and sound but needs flatish field and a
quiet life with lots of love and attention.
Would make ideal companion to another similar type
of horse/pony that is not going to hassle her.

Laminitis 2004
Pelvis/back injury - once settled will get physio to check her
over to see if can help with this - paddock sound
25.07.06 - Dentist - very good to do, had not been done for
a whilst and quite sharp - should be ok for 9 months,
then if ok can go a year
03.08.06 - physio - no signs of pelvis injury, all good
throughout so will start to bring into work and see
how she goes
BARLEY INTOLERENT
16.08.06 - now showing slightly lame downhill,
physio check - pelvis level but muscle wastage and
weakness, continue strengthening work and see how
goes, if can build muscles will help her
20.09.06 - physio - pleased with progress still some
way to go, advised to start riding- walking on roads
and see how goes
04.10.06 - ridden out a few times and proved very
good on roads, keen and forward. Will continue
with same to build muscles
21.03.07 - physio check, all staying in place, still

18.07.07 - physio check, not good, reluctant to trot.
instability in hip joint. off work and on danilon to
see if pain involved

on offside in trot, staying on paddock rest and low
painkillers for few more days and see how goes
17.08.07 - returned from vets after lameness workup -
confirmed slight arthritis through spine, all flared up
and some muscle damage (which should heal fine)
will undergo injections from next week, then have
one month off and if all ok can then get back into light work
17.09.07 - had injection a couple of weeks ago and so
far so good, much more movement through hindquarters
but hind legs not used to this and are weak. Starting very
gentle excercise regime to try and get these muscle working
and a bit more toned.
19.09.07 - have noticed some out of character bahaviour
every so often over last couple of weeks, bloods taken
to see if hormonal etc
16.11.07 - slight cough, lungs ok, put on secreata pro
06.12.07 - vet - not good through back end again -
on painkillers ufn
21.12.07 - blood results normal, scanned ovaries and
again look normal - vet advised due to age may not be
seasoning properly, try a course of regimen to bring
her into season. She may need this mid winter and
spring for rest of life.
05.03.08 - didn't seem to make any difference, brought
magnet blanket and changed routine and stable and
seems much happier - if this lasts and stay comfortable
can look at rehoming as companion shortly

Dam (If known): Missie
Born in the sanctuary? Yes

History:
Born in the sanctuary to Missie.
Being backed for riding 2003, April 2003 hacking out now well
in company, seems to be taking everything in his stride, he will
look at something new but when he sees it again it doesn't
bother him.Should make a great kids pony
2005 - coming on very well, hacking out alone with
competent child and in company with anyone, good in most
traffic (wary of bigger things but if rider competent or with
another quiet horse then is fine)
Very sweet natured and cheeky.Weaned at three months as
mother ill but doesn't seem to have left any side effects.
As he was weaned early we had to continue with supplements
to replace some of his mothers milk, also we did not geld him
until he was 14 months old.
However it was all worthwhile as he is now a strapping,
stocky little pony. He loves people and once schooled
will make a great child's pony
Dec 2004 - been out on loan approx 1 year, ridden on by
caretaker and 12 year old boy, coming on very well.
Caretaker's situation changed and has to come back to
the sanctuary early January so will be ready for
rehoming then
05.01.04 - returned to sanctuary - not been ridden since
end of Oct but we will bring him back into work asap.
Riding out very well on own, can be a bit spooky with
tractors but okay if they stop and turn their engine off.
competent child should have no problem
06.03.05 - rehomed with another small boy, had a whale
of a time, shows, pony club etc, a bit spooky at first in
new homes but once settled was fine.
05.04.06 - returned to sanctuary as lost grazing and
mother lost job, did not want to part with him but
would no longer keep him.
2008 - returned from loan as beat up another horse in
the field, very out of character, will reassess before
rehoming
08.04.08 - settled right back in, no signs of any
problems with other horses, hacking out well

Medical or behavioral history:
Panics on own in stable (if cannot see others in
yard) or in horsebox on own (must travel in

Meet Fable
Fable
Registered as: Frosty's Fable
Fable is a 15.1 hh Mottled Grey with
Black Mane & Tail
Lipizaner X Hanoverian Gelding
approximately 3 years old.
Weight is approximately 120 kgs.

His status is Available Now. This horse is available for rehoming!
Visit the Rehoming Centre for more information
if you're able to offer a home to Fable.
Only available to very experienced home, must have experience
with youngsters, backing and training. Prefer fairly local home
where will eventually be competed under the sanctuary name.
Typical three year old, can be playful and bit full of himself,
can also be spooky and insecure, needs confident, calm handling.
Has done pressure halter work and lungeing, bitted, saddle on etc.
Can be backed lightly later this year, Lipizanners are notoriously
late developers so no heavy schooling till fully devleoped.
Ideal home would include backing and schooling with a view to
dressage or three day eventing in the future. Is coming on well
loading in trailer but not gone anywhere yet. When freeschooling
is jumping very well, over 3 to 4 foot, tremendous scope and
impressive movement.
This is very special horse and will need a very special home
preferably with references as he potentially could go all the way.
Will remeasure asap as looks bigger than 15.2hh now and has
filled out a bit. 19.03.08 - measured but only 15.1hh

Coming on very well, a little wary of larger
traffic on roads but working on this.
Nervous of new riders, will need very relaxed
confident home - must be experienced rider
and live fairly local so can get to know her
here before taking her on loan.
Amazing paces once relaxed, very loving once
trusts people.
04.02.08 - hacking out well in company with
relaxed rider, much more confident
Is only shod on fronts and needs acp to trim
hinds, otherwise good to hose, pick out feet
etc once knows you.
Good to catch and handle but definitely
needs quiet yard, no children and someone
dealing with her on a one to one basis.

This year's foal weaned day before
arrival at sanctuary.
Gave birth at 8pm to Fable,
a colt chestnut foal.
Frosty came in with Bess and is a
brood mare and may never have
been ridden.
She had her foal, a colt we called
Fable and both will stay here
until the foal is fully weaned,
at least another six months.
Then she will be assessed but
she may only be suitable for
re-homing in the future as a
companion as we are unsure if
she is broken.
She will probably remain in the
sanctuary for eight months to
a year before going out to a
new home.
Her foal will be handled from
the day it is born.

Abandoned locally - owner traced and signed over
to Sanctuary
When first found had Laminitis, very overweight
and feet appalling
Age approximate as no history on arrival,
freezemark was done in 1991 and at that time he
was 12.3hh so presume was two at time of marking
20.12.05 - Coming on very well, catching, leading,
feet, etc all good, panic when away from Whisper
but now running in larger herd so should gradually
wean off her.
If all goes well after xmas will step up training and
try to re-back for riding
10.01.06 - started pressure halter work and coming
on well, is not so attached to Whisper now which
is excellent
Sept 06 - slow progress but good, recently seems
to have stopped bucking and last few times has
been pretty good.
Dec 06 - lack of staff has meant putting a hold on
training for time being, will rehome as companion
if home comes up
25.07.07 - been ridden regularly recently and coming
on in leaps and bounds, very good in traffic, happy
to go in front of behind, just needs to canter

and fed too much supplement. will reassess before
rehoming to make sure problems are sorted
Medical or behavioral history:

recheck in 9 months
10.01.07 - physio check - stiff in hind legs, tight at base
of neck and front of shoulder. dropping slightly between

slack abdominals - recommence groundwork in preparation
for riding. excercise hindlimbs to activate abdominal activity.
Polework to achieve better posture and back elevation
26.02.07 - small rub on forehead - vet checked sure its not
ringworm but treating with sporicidal anyway - cleared
well after few days

Black nostrils with lighter hair above
Freezemark/Chip: 30P
Date arrived at Sanctuary: 20.06.02
Born in the sanctuary? No
History:
June 2002 - Arrived overweight - currently being
retrained and on a diet. Owner aged and incapacitated
could no longer care for - one of three brought in together
being schooled for riding 2003 and coming on well
Jan 2004 - riding coming on well, not bucking as much
now, needs confident rider to bring on, good to catch,
shoe, handle etc, will need some schooling to bring to
full potential but competent child or lightweight adult
would be fine.
Very sweet natured pony, good to catch, groom, handle
etc - will make a great riding pony once backed.
Oct- fully backed last spring, homed over summer as
child's pony but children lost interest. Such a shame
as this is a cracking pony, very sweet natured just needs
competent kid to bring him on to his full potential.
Hacks out in company and alone, good in mo
